Texoma Earth Day Recycling Event April 17


Sherman, Texas -- The Texoma Earth Day Festival Planning Committee will offer a public recycling event on North Rusk Street between Pecan & Mulberry in Sherman on Saturday, April 17, 2021. This event is free to the public, and no proof of residency will be required. Participants will enter through the parking lot on the north side of the Sherman Municipal Building and should expect to unload their own materials due to a minimum number of volunteers on site. Masks are required since there will be close contact with the recycling vendors and volunteers.

In addition to the recycling options, the Sherman Animal Shelter Adoption Trailer will be on site adjacent to Lucy Kidd-Key Park. Tacos Hondumex will also be at Rusk Street at Pecan for your dining pleasure.

The partial list of items accepted for recycling is below:

Electronic Waste Recycling:

Keystone Enterprises will be on site to accept your electronic waste. Both businesses and individuals are invited to bring anything a current ran through, whether hard-wired, plugged in or battery operated. The list includes anything powered by a cord or battery; small appliances whether plug in or battery operated, battery operated lawn equipment including batteries and chargers, battery operated tools including batteries & chargers, lighting, lamps, fans, ceiling fans, electronics including entertainment devices, computers and computer equipment including flat screen monitors, flat screen televisions, batteries of any kind including auto and marine batteries, ammunition and firearms, large appliances (refrigerators and air conditioners must be drained of freon), cameras, camcorders, film and digital cameras, portable electronics, cell phones, GPS devices, calculators, CD and DVD players, video games and game systems, sporting goods, golf clubs and bags, helmets, baseball bats and gloves, athletic shoes, air purifiers, baby monitors, vacuum cleaners, sewing machines, and medical equipment.

Keystone Enterprises is not able to accept televisions with tubes or computer monitors with tubes.

Flattened Cardboard

The City of Sherman will provide a larger bin for cardboard recycling. It will be located between the electronic waste recycling station and the shred truck so cardboard for hauling those items can be flattened to add to the container. We as that anyone bringing surplus cardboard for recycling please flattened the boxes before arriving at the event.

Paper Shredding:

Mobile Shred It and Forget It will be on site to safely destroy sensitive documents for individuals. This service is not open to businesses, and no trailers full of documents will be allowed on site. Some examples of the types of documents that can be shredded are tax information, contracts, legal papers, old rental agreements, bank statements and checks and more. Participants need to plan to drive through, unload and leave immediately. No one will be allowed to stay to watch their documents be shredded so we can keep the line moving. Cardboard boxes will be flattened and placed in a separate container provided by the City of Sherman. Newspaper, catalogs and junk mail can be placed in the container designated for items going to Choctaw Nation for recycling.

Miscellaneous Materials:

A container designated for items to be recycled by Choctaw Nation Recycling Program will be on site and clearly marked with the items they accept. There will be a large trash can for collecting plastic bags, so they are not loose in the larger container. The container be on site from Friday April 16 through Sunday April 18. Plastic bags can only be recycled on Saturday during the recycling event. Individuals can add paper of any kind including bagged shredded paper, newspaper, clean Styrofoam, Plastics #1, #2, and #5, including medicine bottles, printer ink and toner cartridges, cell phones, and plastic grocery and produce bags, and plastic shrink film.

Glass Recycling:

Strategic Materials will provide a container for glass recycling. Individuals and businesses are invited to bring glass bottles and jars of any color and place them in the container. The container will remain on site from Friday, Apr 16 through Sunday, Apr 18. We ask that those recycling glass please be careful when placing glass in the container and try to avoid breaking it. The collection is restricted to glass bottles and jars of any color. Items that cannot be recycled include plate glass, vases, glass dishes, cookware, or bakeware.

Latex Paint Recycling:

TCOG (Texoma Council of Governments will provide a first-time recycling option at a Texoma Earth Day event by offering a special collection of latex paint in any condition. Households are limited to 10 one-gallon cans. The paint can be in any condition, but cans must be closed and not leaking. This collection is first come first served, and no reservations will be taken. When the truck is full, the collection will end. The collection is funded through the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality.

The collection does not include oil-based paint, stains, or varnishes.

Eyeglasses:

The Sherman Noon Lion’s Club will collect eyeglasses at the Earth Day Recycling Event. Both regular glasses and sunglasses are welcome. Look for their tent near Sherman Animal Shelter Adoption Trailer and Tacos Hondumex.

Prescription Drugs:

The Sherman Police Department will not offer a drug collection during the recycle event. They now collect drugs at the station every day, and we want to make you aware of it. Please take your drugs to the main lobby of the Sherman Police Department at 317 S. Travis, Sherman Texas any day. We will be prepared to provide directions to the Central Station for those who are accustomed to bringing drugs to our events.

The Sherman Police re not able to accept inhalers and liquids such as IV bags.

Disclosure:

This event does not include household hazardous waste such as oil-based paint, varnishes, chemicals, tires, etc. with the exception for the latex paint above.
