Sterling Heights Selected Priority Waste as its New Garbage Contractor

SEATTLE (Recycling Monster): The Sterling Heights City Council has selected Priority Waste as its new contractor for picking up garbage, yard waste and recyclables. The contract will be valid for a period of ten years. The decision was passed by a 5-2 vote during the Council meeting.

According to Public Works Director Michael Moore, the City has been in contract with GFL Environmental USA Inc. for waste hauling service. However, the existing contract lapses at the end of April next year. It was in May this year that the City called for request for proposals to run the program effective May 2024.

In addition to Priority Waste, the City had received bids from current contractor GFL Environmental USA Inc., Waste Management of Michigan Inc., and FCC Environmental Services LLC.

Priority Waste offered the lowest bid with a ten-year contract cost of around $88.3 million. This was nearly $23.2 million lower than the second lowest quote by GFL of $111.5 million. Also, Priority offered a discount of $1 million in exchange for the ten-year contract. The new contract will cost the average household $135.96 per year, which is $29.03 more than the current annual charges.
