Stericycle Agrees to Pay $9.5M Penalty for RCRA Violations

SEATTLE (Recycling Monster): The U.S. EPA and Department of Justice announced that Stericycle has agreed to pay a $9.5 million civil penalty for violating the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) at its former hazardous waste management company.

The infraction took place from May 2014 to April 2020. For delivering hazardous garbage to disposal sites that the clients had not authorized, the business received a citation. Additionally, hazardous waste materials were delivered without the necessary manifests. Stericycle ran 44 waste transfer sites and a total of 13 RCRA-permitted facilities. The firm was later sold to Harsco by the company.

In order to maintain track of the type of waste being sent, the EPA saw that the corporation neglected to report inconsistencies on shipping manifests. Additionally, the business did not promptly turn in the necessary manifests and other paperwork to the authorities. Furthermore, the business received a citation for unlawfully keeping hazardous garbage in transfer facilities.

According to U.S. EPA and DOJ, the settlement agreement with Stericycle is subject to approval by the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York.

Stericycle, which was also purchased by WM in November of last year, chose not to comment.
