ST. JOHNS COUNTY, Fla. — After the holidays are over, and those special meals are sitting around waiting for seconds and thirds, what do you do with your used cooking oils?
The City of St. Augustine and St. Johns County Utilities will host a special community recycling event on Wednesday, Jan. 4, 2023. Residents will be able to drop off used cooking oil and household electronics at two drop off points. From 7:30 a.m. until 2:30 p.m., those items will be accepted at 25 W. Castillo Dr. (Francis Field Downtown) and at 840 W. 16th St. on Anastasia Island.
The sauces, butter, and dairy byproducts from cooking can cause clogged pipes and sewage backups if improperly disposed. This may affect the drainage in homes and impact the public sewer system.
The best way to prepare fats, oils and grease for disposal is to pour a small quantity into a heat-safe container. Cool it or freeze it, then seal and set it aside so it can be easily transported and dropped off for disposal.
Cooking oil, including but not limited to vegetable, peanut, canola, and deep-fryer oil, will all be accepted at the recycling drop points. Using a heat-safe container will avoid any mishaps with the container melting or shattering.
For electronics: cellphones, those old VCRs lying around collecting dust, DVD players, and maybe broken X-Box or PlayStations. Outdated and broken “E-waste” or electronic devices will be accepted as well. See the complete list below:
