SEATTLE (Recycling Monster): The most recent community impact report from Seattle Public Utilities (SPU) outlines the significant achievements over the past 12 months.
In 2024, it gathered over 4.1 million pounds of illegally dumped products, litter, and other waste through six programs, according to the report. With this, the total amount collected between 2022 and 2024 is now 13.8 million pounds. Over 800,000 sharp objects have been collected thanks to the 23 disposal bins located across the city. Over 2 million sharp objects have been eliminated between 2022 and 2024.
Compared to 2023, more residents volunteered for more hours in 2024 through SPU's Adopt a Street initiative. Volunteer hours from Seattle residents increased from 16,103 in 2022 to 28,865 in 2023. Over 350 volunteers participated in 10 cleanup sessions under the All Hands Neighborhood Cleanup Series, which removed over 250,000 pounds of trash.
According to Andrew Lee, SPU's general manager and CEO, the better outcomes demonstrate the university's strong environmental commitment through waste removal. He encouraged other locals and civic associations to join the initiative.
