Readington County’s Contract with Republic Services to Expire Dec. 31

SEATTLE (Recycling Monster): The Readington Township’s contract with Republic Services for garbage and recycling collection is due to expire on 31st December, 2023. No new contract has been reached so far. The Township Committee decided on Nov 6 not to enter into new contract with Republic.

The township had invited bids for 2024 collection this summer. However, it received only two bids. The lowest bidder was Republic Services at $1.99 million, which is significantly higher than the existing contract by 223%. Also, the bid submitted by the company proposes an annual increase of 6% until 2028 and an end to the sticker program. The higher price charged by Republic Services is on account of higher insurance costs and tipping fees, authorities noted.

The only other bidder was Sanico, whose quote was more than $2 million.

According to Richard Sheola, Township Administrator, the quote by Republic Services was way out of the realm of reality. The city would not be able to meet the high expenditure, as it will do damage to the municipal budget. If the bid is approved, residents would vote to exceed the budget cap in a referendum. It would cost around $35,000 for holding the referendum, Sheola noted.
