Lorain County Launches Plastic Bag Recycling Drive to Reward Local Schools

SEATTLE (Recycling Monster): Lorain County has unveiled a new plastic bag recycling initiative aimed at promoting sustainability while supporting local schools through eco-friendly rewards. The program, officially announced during the Lorain County Commissioners’ meeting last week, encourages residents to recycle their plastic grocery bags in exchange for points benefiting area schools.

According to the Lorain County Solid Waste Management District, the collection program will begin on November 15, 2025, coinciding with America Recycles Day. Plastic grocery bags can be dropped off at the Lorain County Collection Center, located at 540 South Abbe Road in Elyria. The drive-through facility will accept donations on regular business days — Mondays (9 a.m. to 3 p.m.), Wednesdays (noon to 6 p.m.), and Saturdays (9 a.m. to 3 p.m.) — through the end of the year.

Each bag will be tagged, weighed, and credited to a school chosen by the donor. The top three schools collecting the highest total weight of plastic bags will receive prizes crafted from recycled materials.

Brandi Schnell, Special Projects Manager for the district, said the winning schools will receive sustainable items such as benches, picnic tables, or playground equipment made from recycled plastic lumber. “These prizes not only reward community participation but also create long-term benefits for students,” Schnell added.

The initiative underscores Lorain County’s commitment to reducing plastic waste and fostering environmental awareness among young residents.
