Philadelphia Launches Phase 2 of Twice-Weekly Trash Collection Program

SEATTLE (Recycling Monster): Philadelphia Mayor Cherelle L. Parker has announced Phase 2 of the Twice-Weekly Trash Collection Program, advancing the city’s goal of becoming the safest, cleanest, and greenest big city in the nation.

Developed in partnership with the Office of Clean and Green Initiatives and the Department of Sanitation, the program is designed to improve waste management and neighborhood cleanliness across the city.

Phase 2 begins Monday, January 5, 2026, covering North Philadelphia areas from Vine Street to Hunting Park Avenue, Broad Street to the Schuylkill River, and Vine Street to Glenwood Avenue, Broad Street to the Delaware River. “We are advancing the One Philly, United City Cleaning Initiative,” Mayor Parker said. “South Philly and Center City residents were the first to benefit, and now North Philadelphia is next. We will not stop until we eliminate the ‘Filthadelphia’ label.”

Targeted communities were selected for high population density, multi-family residences, and limited waste storage, factors that have contributed to illegal dumping. Carlton Williams, Director of the Office of Clean and Green Initiatives, highlighted a 20% drop in illegal dumping calls in South Philly since 2024. The Department of Sanitation expects similar improvements in North Philadelphia.
