Brandon Considers Pilot Program to Expand Organic Waste Recycling to Apartments

SEATTLE (Recycling Monster): The City of Brandon may expand its organic waste program to residents in multi-unit homes and apartments through a new pilot project. Currently, green-bin pickup is only available for single-family homes and smaller multi-unit buildings.

City administration presented the plan at a recent council meeting, proposing a 12-week pilot program for 120 homes. Participants would receive electric food recyclers, appliances roughly the size of a coffee maker that dry and grind food scraps into a soil-like product over several hours. Residents would track food waste weight and usage cycles and complete surveys, with a minimal fee possible. Participants would keep the recyclers after the pilot ends.

The resulting compost could be used for houseplants, community gardens, or other purposes. According to Lindsay Hargreaves, the city’s environmental initiatives coordinator, the program could reduce black-bin garbage volume by up to 50 percent, lower methane emissions from landfills, and save costs for private building owners.

The current green-cart system serves over 10,000 homes, and similar electric recycler programs operate in more than 150 communities nationwide.
