SEATTLE (Recycling Monster): The Village of Park Forest is giving the community another opportunity to safely dispose of sensitive documents and unwanted medications. This will take place at its fall Shred/Drug Take-Back Event on Saturday, Oct. 3.
The event will run from 10 a.m. to noon in the parking lot of Main Street and Orchard Drive. Residency is not a requirement to participate.
Participants may bring up to two boxes or bags of sensitive paper documents per vehicle for on-site shredding. We will not accept three-ring binders, binder clips, plastic sleeves, or garbage. The event will also collect unwanted over-the-counter or prescription medications, excluding liquids and sharps.
Convenient Drive-Up Service
The event offers a convenient drive-up service. Participants can remain in their vehicles while staff and volunteers remove materials from their trunks.
Sustainability Coordinator Carrie Malfeo said events such as the Shred/Drug Take-Back give residents convenient ways to dispose of materials properly. Additionally, this helps keep waste out of the regular trash stream or waterways.
“Responsible disposal is an important part of sustainability, and events like this make it easier for people to do the right thing,” Malfeo said. “Whether it’s securely shredding documents or properly disposing of medications, these are simple actions that can make a difference in protecting our community and our environment.”
The event is part of Park Forest’s broader commitment to sustainability. The Village adopted the Climate Action and Resilience Plan in 2019. It also set an objective to ensure 100% of Park Forest residents have access to waste reduction and recycling resources. The plan includes reducing waste, expanding recycling opportunities, and encouraging residents to reuse and dispose of materials responsibly. Park Forest has also earned LEED Cities and Communities certification. Furthermore, it received SolSmart accreditation for its sustainability efforts.
“Sustainability has been part of Park Forest’s identity for many years,” Malfeo said. “Providing programs that residents can easily participate in helps turn those larger sustainability goals into everyday actions.”
