Paint Recycling Program Launched in Buffalo

SEATTLE (Recycling Monster): PaintCare, a leading non-profit organization created by the paint industry through the American Coatings Association, announced launch of new paint recycling program Thursday in Buffalo. It urged households, schools and businesses to dispose of their leftover latex and oil-based paints and paint cans.

A total of 17 paint drop-off sites have opened in Buffalo region since the beginning of May this year, with additional sites in Western New York region. The site address, operating hours and the list of accepted items are provided in the official PaintCare website.

According to guidelines provided by PaintCare, each customer will be able to drop off up to five gallons of paint. The paint should be brought to the facility in their original containers with clear labels so as to identify the manufacturer of the product. Customers and businesses are advised to get in touch with the collection centres to confirm site timings and the type and volume of paint accepted by them.

The Buffalo paint recycling program is being implemented on the heels of the paint stewardship law passed in 2019 by the New York State Legislature, which makes it mandatory for anyone who produces, sells, and uses paint to ensure proper recycling of leftover paint. Currently, most unwanted paint gets disposed of in landfills or waste-to-energy (WTE) facilities.
