Orange County to fine for improper recycling

GOSHEN – In the past, companies that accepted recycled items would pay counties for their materials. That has changed and those companies are now charging counties to accept their recycling.

If it is not separated from regular garbage properly, Orange County is going to be imposing an additional fee, said Bob Gray, county DPW deputy commissioner.

“If a load is found to contain 10 percent or more of garbage in the recycling, we are assessed a $175 fee on top of what we pay, so what the county has done, we have implemented a $100 fee to haulers or municipalities that bring us a single stream load that contains more than 10 percent of MSW, or garbage, if you will,” he said.

Orange County trucks out one to two trailer loads of recyclables – that’s 17,000 tons of single-stream recyclables, weekly.
