Ontario County Launches May Recycling Events, Promotes Composting to Cut Landfill Waste

SEATTLE (Recycling Monster): Ontario County has announced a series of recycling initiatives and sustainability programs for May, including tire and electronics recycling events along with discounted composting kits for residents. Registration is currently open for both recycling drives, aimed at improving waste management and reducing landfill dependency.

A residential tire recycling event will take place on May 2 at the Farmington highway facility, with free participation for county residents and a limit of 10 tires per household. Meanwhile, an electronics recycling event is scheduled for May 16 at the Bristol highway facility, also free of charge, with advance registration required.

In addition to recycling efforts, the county is promoting backyard composting by offering composting kits for $25 through early May. Each kit includes an 80-gallon compost bin, kitchen waste collector, aerator, and base screen, designed to help households manage organic waste efficiently.

Officials highlighted that composting can divert over 30% of daily waste from landfills, a crucial step as the Ontario County Landfill approaches its planned closure in 2028. These initiatives reflect the county’s broader push toward sustainable waste solutions and increased community participation in environmental programs.
