SEATTLE (Recycling Monster): The National Waste & Recycling Association (NWRA) announced that it has partnered with the leading national fleet trucking safety organization Together for Safer Roads (TSR) to offer its fleet safety program to smaller haulers with fleet comprising of fewer than 100 trucks.
The Fleet Safety Training Program, which has been in operations since 2022, will now help small and midsized fleet operators to improve their safety culture. The program will be offered online, thus making it more accessible and adaptable. The partnership is in alignment with the waste industry’s ongoing efforts to improve injury and fatality rates. It must be noted that the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) has named waste collection as the seventh deadliest jobs in the U.S. in 2022.
The partnership noted that workers are forced to play multiple roles in smaller companies due to personnel constraints. Often, companies with less than 50 trucks are unlikely to hire a dedicated safety manager. The program offered by the partnership will help in building a safety culture in such environments.
The program is flexible and can be customized to the operations and priorities of independent haulers. Providing safety training for small and midsize fleets is vital as they account for approximately 88% of all commercial fleets on the road.
