SEATTLE (Recycling Monster): The new waste disposal ban regulations, aimed at reducing trash and promoting recycling and re-using, has come into effect in Massachusetts yesterday, 1st November, 2022.
The earlier regulation implemented in 2014 had imposed a food waste ban on businesses and institutions disposing more than one ton per week. This has resulted in tripling the food diversion rates. However, food waste still accounts for almost one fifth of the total trash volumes. This has prompted the administration to reduce the limit to half-ton per week. The new regulation will bring further progress, as it is likely to bring around 4,000 businesses under compliance.
Also, it bans the disposal of mattresses and textiles in the trash. It must be noted that the Commonwealth throws out more than 200,000 tons of textiles in the trash every year. In addition to old clothing, the textile waste also comprises other cloth materials like towels, linens, bags, belts, and shoes. The availability of huge number of collection centres for these materials prompted the state to ban the disposal of the same in trash. In fact, residents stand a good chance of getting paid for the used textiles. As per estimates, the Commonwealth generates around 600,000 unwanted mattresses every year.
