New Study Unveiled Benefits of Used Beverage Can Recycling

SEATTLE (Recycling Monster): The latest study commissioned by the International Aluminum Institute (IAI) has revealed outstanding climate-related benefits of used beverage can recycling.

As per the report, recycling of cans around the globe could result in savings of 60 million tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent by the end of the current decade. The study was co-funded by Emirates Global Aluminium, Crown Holdings, Australian Aluminium Council and Novelis.

The study assessed waste management systems in six countries- Australia, Cambodia, South Korea, Thailand, the United Arab Emirates (UAE), and Vietnam. Apart from providing countrywise insights into collection, processing and recycling, it also offers suggestions to boost recycling rates.

Thailand, Cambodia and Vietnam have informal collection mechanisms which basically rely on informal workers. Australia and South Korea have developed systems driven by complex waste management systems. The UAE has developed collection infrastructure, but is short of well-managed systems to manage waste.

The study predicts 50% surge in global aluminum can consumption from around 420 billion cans in 2020 to nearly 630 billion cans by 2030.
