New Brunswick Announced Major Expansion of Glass Recycling Program

SEATTLE (Recycling Monster): The New Brunswick province and 31 private recycling facilities had begun collecting glass for recycling in 2020, before which these materials used to end up in landfills. The province now aims to expand the glass recycling services to all the 70 redemption centres spread across the province.

Since the inception of the program, approximately 101 tonnes of glass have been diverted from landfills. With 31 participating locations now, this is obviously a ‘huge’ volume. By increasing the collection to 70 centres, the province aims to provide big boost to volumes, thus enabling diversion of more materials from landfills. The Department of Environment and Climate Change noted that works in connection with adding the remaining 39 locations are already on, but declined to comment on how long the entire process may take to complete.

The collected glass are sent to RES, where they are crushed for further processing to produce materials used in manufacturing new products. The residents are advised to remove the lid, before dropping glass for recycling. The inside must be cleaned thoroughly and must be free of liquid and food. There is no need to remove the labels.

The province noted that it will be difficult to bring recycling depots as part of the program, as these centers receive no compensation for recycling glass.
