Monroe County Expands Recycling Program to Include Paper and Plastic To-Go Cups

SEATTLE (Recycling Monster): Monroe County has expanded its residential recycling rules to include everyday paper and plastic to-go cups, a move officials say will significantly reduce landfill waste and strengthen local sustainability efforts. County Executive Adam Bello announced that residents may now recycle clean, empty paper beverage cups along with clear and white plastic takeout cups through the county program.

The update targets a substantial waste stream. Nationwide, nearly 50 billion paper cups used for hot coffee, iced drinks, and fountain beverages are discarded each year, most of which historically ended up in landfills. By accepting these materials, Monroe County aims to capture more recoverable resources and return them to productive use.

County environmental officials emphasized that the expansion supports a circular economy by keeping valuable materials in circulation rather than disposing of them after a single use. Residents are also encouraged to review recycling guidelines to ensure proper participation.

All collected recyclables are processed at the Monroe County Recycling Center, which has served the region since 1992. The facility sorts and bales materials before selling them to manufacturers that convert them into new products. Residents should follow preparation guidelines to ensure recycling.
