Michigan Launches Regional Survey to Reduce 24 Million Tons of Landfill Waste

SEATTLE (Recycling Monster): Michigan sent nearly 24 million tons of solid waste to landfills last year, but a new regional initiative aims to help cut that number by improving recycling and waste management. Networks Northwest is urging residents and businesses across a 10-county region—from Emmet County to Manistee—to participate in an anonymous survey open until January 5.

The survey is part of a statewide effort to modernize recycling, waste reduction, and sustainable materials management programs under Michigan’s Natural Resources and Environmental Protection Act. According to Networks Northwest Community Planner Mike Szokola, broad community participation is essential. “When more people are involved, you uncover issues and opportunities you may not have considered,” he said. “This planning will help Northwest Michigan build a more efficient, cost-effective waste management system supported by real input from residents and businesses.”

Survey results will guide counties in evaluating current waste, recycling, and composting practices. The data will help shape strategies to boost sustainability, reduce landfill volumes, and improve the efficiency of local systems. Once compiled, the findings will be shared with local officials, who will use them to determine policy priorities and infrastructure investments aimed at strengthening recycling programs and cutting landfill waste.
