SEATTLE (Recycling Monster):The Littleton City Council has unanimously approved the South Metro Waste Diversion Plan — a landmark regional initiative spearheaded by Colorado Circular Communities Enterprises to significantly improve recycling rates and reduce landfill waste across the southern Denver metropolitan area over the next decade.
Developed in partnership with the neighboring cities of Centennial, Englewood, and Sheridan, the plan marks a pivotal move toward a more coordinated and sustainable approach to waste management in the region. With this adoption, Littleton’s city staff will now embark on the next phase — conducting in-depth research, gathering public feedback, and drafting ordinances to bring the plan’s recommendations into action.

At its core, the South Metro Waste Diversion Plan sets a roadmap for transitioning toward a circular economy — one that emphasizes keeping materials in use for as long as possible through practices such as sharing, leasing, reusing, repairing, refurbishing, and recycling. The initiative also calls for a comprehensive assessment of existing waste practices, the modernization of recycling infrastructure, and the development of city-specific implementation strategies to ensure effective execution.
Community engagement will play a central role in shaping the program’s next steps. Throughout 2026, officials plan to expand public outreach, host stakeholder workshops, and begin work on a new licensing system for waste haulers.
