Mecklenburg County Expands Recycling Program to Accept Plastic Bags and Wraps

SEATTLE (Recycling Monster): Mecklenburg County Solid Waste has expanded its recycling program to accept plastic bags and wraps, offering residents a convenient and environmentally responsible disposal option. Items can now be dropped off at county full-service recycling facilities and the staffed drop-off center at William R. Davie Park.

Plastic bags and wraps should never be placed in curbside recycling bins. Instead, residents are encouraged to bring clean and dry materials directly to approved centers. Acceptable items include grocery and retail bags, bread and produce bags, ice bags, resealable bags, dry cleaning covers, bubble wrap, air pillows, plastic shipping envelopes, and product wraps. Materials that stretch when pulled and carry recycling codes 2 or 4 are generally accepted, while shiny, crinkly, or paper-tearing plastics are not.

“Residents asked for more recycling options, and we delivered,” said Solid Waste Director Jeff Smithberger. “This expansion helps keep plastic out of landfills and supports meaningful reuse.”

The plastic bag initiative follows recent program enhancements, including the acceptance of solar panels and compostable food scraps. Mecklenburg County’s recycling system processes more than 100,000 tons of material annually, advancing sustainability goals and environmental stewardship across the region.
