SEATTLE (Recycling Monster): In a memo to the county commissioners, Mayor Daniella Levine Cava's office stated that she intended to drop a plan to construct a new waste-to-energy (WTE) facility. It suggests constructing a new landfill in the interim.
The document states that the expenses of constructing and operating a new WTE plant are anticipated to be quite expensive. The chosen location might also present legal and other difficulties. Note that there has been an unanticipated delay in the project to construct a WTE facility in the location of the now-decommissioned Doral facility.

The board of county commissioners was advised in the memo to construct a new landfill, which is expected to cost about $556 million. It is estimated that the landfill will cost $163 million to operate each year. It stated that the new landfill will provide a long-term answer for its disposal requirements. The country board will now address the matter during its special meeting, which is set for today.
The most recent projections place the yearly operations and maintenance expenditures of a new WTE facility in Doral at approximately $59.3 million, while the capital costs will be approximately $1.5 billion.
The county department of solid waste management manages over 2.4 million tons of waste annually, according to the mayor's office. The county has been sending its waste to private landfills for the last two years.
