MARINETTE—Roll out the green bins.
Marinette city residents will use their new carts next week as the City of Marinette and Waste Management (WM) launches its updated waste and recycling program on Monday.
No need to remember a new trash day—residents can stick to the pickup day they previously had—but the recycling schedule will change to every other week. The first week of recycling will start next week and be picked up the same day and time as garbage.
Residents are keeping the phones busy at Marinette City Hall, concerning the change.
“The recycling container—that’s been a common question,” said Brian Miller, director of public works and city engineer. “People are having a hard time figuring out which one is which. The recycling is the yellow top.”
Many questions from residents are also revolving around when people are getting their bins. The city is fielding these calls by checking against a list of addresses they’re provided by WM once they’ve dropped off the bins in a neighborhood. If a resident phones in to say they haven’t received their bins, the city checks to make sure the caller’s name is on the list, he said.
“If their name isn’t on the list, we communicate with WM and have them schedule a delivery,” he said.
The city anticipates that all home deliveries should be finished by this week, he said.
How do I put out my cart?To get ready for collection day, place carts on the curb by 6 a.m. to ensure that bins aren’t missed. Place the carts three feet apart from each other and three feet from any fixed object, with the handles facing the house. Residents are asked to remove the carts 12 hours after pickup. People can call the city at 715-732-5134 if they have issues with carts or service.
“People are asking where to put the garbage bins,” he said. “Pickup will be where your previous pickup was.”
The new 64-gallon carts hold about six 13-gallon trash bags on average and have a weight limit of 225 pounds, he said. Residents should keep the recycling loose in their recycling bin, but the garbage must be bagged.
“We don’t care what bags they use—that depends on the homeowner—but all garbage has to be in bags,” he said.
What if I want more bins?
Those who can’t fit their trash and recyclables into the two bins may call to get an extra recycling or trash cart—or both. The extra solid waste bin costs $105 and the recycling bin costs $57.60, which are the same amounts the city is paying for the first set of bins for each resident, Miller said.
“They’re not being charged more,” he said. “We bid out the collection program, so it’s a certain dollar amount per household per cart.”
The bins are billed on an annual basis and each household is eligible for one extra set, according to WM. People can call WM at 888-960-0008 to order a pair or one individual bin. The city does not handle ordering extra bins, Miller said.
Where can I dispose of old trash cans?
Waste Management will place a container at the City of Marinette dump site, 2411 Cleveland Ave., from Oct. 17 to Nov. 11 to collect old trash and recycling bins, free of charge. Residents can also dispose of their old carts during the regular business hours for the dump—Wednesdays from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and Saturdays from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.
