Louisiana Awards USD 43,722 in Grants to Universities for Recycling and Plastic Reduction Initiatives

SEATTLE (Recycling Monster): Lieutenant Governor Billy Nungesser and Keep Louisiana Beautiful (KLB) have announced the 2025–2026 recipients of the University Affiliate Grant Program, awarding USD 43,722 in reimbursement grants to eight Louisiana universities to expand recycling programs and reduce single-use plastics on campus.

The initiative is funded through a five-year EPA Gulf of Mexico Trash-Free Waters Grant and supports student-led sustainability projects at Dillard University, Louisiana State University, Louisiana Tech University, Loyola University New Orleans, Nicholls State University, Tulane University, the University of Louisiana at Monroe, and the University of New Orleans.

Nungesser said investing in students and campus-based initiatives helps build lifelong environmental habits that protect Louisiana’s communities, waterways, and natural resources. He emphasized that engaging young people in recycling and litter prevention is critical to creating a cleaner, more sustainable future for the state.

Grant-funded projects include expanding recycling infrastructure, improving the movement and processing of recyclable materials, distributing reusable water bottles, installing water bottle refill stations, upgrading recycling equipment, and eliminating single-use disposable utensils from dining services.

KLB Executive Director Susan Russell said the universities’ efforts demonstrate practical ways to cut plastic waste and increase recycling rates, while raising awareness.
