Logan County E-Waste Drive Offers Mostly Free Electronics Recycling Oct. 23

The Russellville, Kentucky, collection will accept computers, phones, tablets, gaming equipment and other electronics, with only televisions and computer monitors carrying a $10 fee.

MONTREAL (RecyclingMonster): Logan County, Kentucky, has partnered with Franklin-based City eWaste to host a fall electronics recycling drive, giving residents another option for disposing of unwanted electronic devices.

The Logan County Fall eWaste Collection Day will take place Friday, October 23, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Logan County Recycling Center, 1230 Morgantown Road in Russellville.

The event will operate as a drive-through collection, with City eWaste staff handling electronics after residents arrive at the site.

Most Electronics Will Be Accepted Free

Residents can bring a wide range of electronic equipment, including computers, laptops, mobile phones, tablets, gaming consoles, speakers, cameras, cable boxes, cords, wires, software and small household appliances.

Most accepted electronics will be recycled free of charge. Televisions and computer monitors will carry a fee of $10 each.

Payment for fee-based items can be made using cash, Venmo, Cash App or PayPal.

Spring Collection Gathered More Than 4,600 Pounds

The fall event follows Logan County's spring electronics collection in May, which gathered more than 4,600 pounds of electronic waste.

City eWaste CEO and Founder Matthew Rogers said partnerships with counties can help smaller communities provide residents with access to secure electronics recycling services.

Logan County Solid Waste Coordinator Nathan Cockrill also encouraged residents to use the event to clear out unwanted electronics while most items can be dropped off without a fee.

Devices May Be Reused Before Materials Are Recycled

Collected electronics will be evaluated for possible refurbishment and reuse. Devices that cannot be reused will be dismantled so recoverable components and materials can enter appropriate recycling streams.

City eWaste also provides secure data-destruction services as part of its electronics processing operations.

The Special Event Fills a Gap in Logan County's Regular Recycling Service

The takeaway: This is more than another one-day drop-off event. Logan County's regular recycling center accepts everyday materials such as paper, cardboard, plastic bottles and aluminum cans, but it specifically does not accept televisions. The October 23 event temporarily adds a pathway for TVs, monitors and a much broader range of electronics.

Why the partnership matters

City eWaste is providing the collection crew, truck, transportation and secure data destruction without charging the county for those services. That gives Logan County a way to offer specialized e-waste collection without operating a permanent electronics-processing program itself.

The model may be especially relevant for smaller communities where maintaining a full-time electronics recycling program can be difficult. City eWaste's municipal program is built around temporary collection events, transportation, processing and chain-of-custody reporting handled by the recycling company.

The first test already produced measurable volume

Logan County's May collection recovered more than 4,600 pounds of electronics. The county and City eWaste are now hoping the fall event exceeds that result and supports continuation of the collection as an annual program.

One practical step before drop-off

City eWaste recommends removing device locks and performing a factory reset when possible before recycling phones, computers and other data-bearing electronics. The company says data is securely destroyed during processing, but erasing personal information beforehand adds another layer of protection for residents.

The collection will remain open from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on October 23 at the Logan County Recycling Center in Russellville.
