SEATTLE (Recycling Monster): Fairfax City is set to upgrade its solid waste and recycling collection program with the rollout of new trash and recycling carts starting January 2026. This initiative aims to boost collection efficiency, safety, and service quality for residents.
In addition to the standard 64-gallon carts, residents can now request smaller 32-gallon carts for trash, recycling, or both. Residents who prefer to keep their current containers may opt out of the program.
The new lidded and wheeled carts are designed to prevent windblown litter and protect recyclables from rain and snow, improving curbside collection throughout the community. Standardizing cart sizes will also allow the city to streamline collection routes, leading to significant cost savings.
All single-family homes, townhomes, and duplexes with city curbside collection will receive the new carts. Additionally, Fairfax City plans a one-time take-back program to recycle old or unwanted containers, with details expected this fall.
The rollout underscores Fairfax City’s commitment to sustainability, operational efficiency, and continuous improvement in municipal services.
