Li-Cycle to Expand Battery Recycling Operations in Monroe County

SEATTLE (Recycling Monster): Canada-headquartered Li-Cycle has entered into an agreement with New York State to expand its U.S. operations. The announcement to this effect was made by Governor Kathy Hochul.

Accordingly, the new facility, known as the Rochester Hub, is being constructed on a 41-acre parcel of land formerly known as Eastman Business Park South. The business park already operates a Spoke facility. The new project is expected to create over 1,000 jobs during construction and nearly 270 new jobs upon operation.

Li-Cycle will receive up to $13.5 million in state support through Empire State Development's performance-based Excelsior Jobs Tax Credit Program, subject to the company meeting the new job commitments. The project has also received assistance from Monroe County and Greater Rochester Enterprise.

The commissioning of the Rochester Hub facility is expected to start in stages commencing next year, company news release said.

The Spoke and Hub operations will complement each other. The Spokes processes end-of life batteries and battery manufacturing scrap to produce blackmass, which are then processed at Hubs where they are converted into battery-grade materials using proprietary process. The Spoke operation has a capacity to shred up to 5,000 tonnes of li-ion batteries per year.
