Johnson City Anticipates Rebound in Recycling, Amidst Market Fluctuations

SEATTLE (Recycling Monster): The Johnson City Solid Waste Manager Hal Crawford expressed hopes to continue with its unique curbside recycling programme, despite market fluctuations and operating challenges. Further, Crawford highlighted the huge support for the program from its residents.

The city’s curbside recycling is about to complete 35 years of successful operation. It has helped the city in generating revenues by way of selling recyclables. The program is unique in the sense that recyclables collected from households are separated by staffers at curbside, thus preventing it from getting mixed or contaminated.

City of Minot Curbside Recycling Program Touted as Huge Success

In the fiscal year ended 30th June, 2022, the city grossed $771,546, mainly driven by good market prices for recyclables. The market remained pretty good for many recyclables. This, coupled with commercial revenue and savings resulting from eliminating landfill costs, helped the city’s recycling program to break even, more than offsetting the expenses which totalled around $1.1 billion. The success comes amidst failures of curbside programs elsewhere in Kingsport and Jonesborough.

It must be noted that the gap between expenses and savings was $400,000 in fiscal 2020 and over $300,000 in fiscal 2021.
