Illinois Paint Recycling Program Collects 60,000 Gallons in First Two Months After Launch

SEATTLE (Recycling Monster): Illinois’ newly launched architectural paint recycling program is gaining rapid momentum just two months after its statewide rollout. Operated by PaintCare, a nonprofit established by the American Coatings Association (ACA), the initiative provides households and businesses with a convenient, year-round system to recycle leftover paint, stain, primers, sealers and varnishes.

The program, which officially began on December 1, 2025, was enabled by bipartisan paint stewardship legislation passed by the Illinois General Assembly and signed into law by Governor JB Pritzker in 2023. At a press conference held at the Illinois State Capitol, lawmakers and industry leaders highlighted early results, including the collection of an estimated 60,000 gallons of leftover paint within the first two months.

More than 340 drop-off site partners have already joined the network, primarily paint and hardware retailers, along with local government and nonprofit facilities. Participation is voluntary, allowing residents and businesses to recycle eligible products during regular business hours.

PaintCare estimates the Illinois program will manage nearly one million gallons of paint in its first year, strengthening recycling infrastructure and advancing responsible materials management statewide.
