SEATTLE (Recycling Monster): Illinois has officially expanded its statewide battery recycling efforts under the new Illinois Portable and Medium-format Battery Stewardship Act. The expansion is aimed at making battery recycling safer, easier, and more accessible across the state.
The expanded program will be operated through The Battery Network. It will accept all household batteries, including both single-use and rechargeable types, as well as medium-format rechargeable batteries used in various devices.
In addition, the program will accept damaged or defective lithium batteries, including swollen, cracked, leaking, or overheated units. However, residenta are required to drop off these items at designated authorized collection sites.

Leo Raudys, CEO of The Battery Network observed that proper battery recycling will not only help to prevent fires, chemical leaks, and landfill contamination, but will also play a key role in conserving valuable materials for reuse.
Welcoming the initiative, Illinois EPA Director James Jenningsnoted that the strong early response shows residents and businesses are actively seeking expanded recycling options that strengthen the state’s recycling infrastructure.
The growing network of participating retailers, municipalities, and community organizations will help Illinois in improving battery recycling access, thereby reducing safety risks associated with improper disposal.
