Heil Company Celebrates 125 Years of Innovation in Waste Management

SEATTLE (Recycling Monster): Heil Company, a leading manufacturer of refuse collection vehicles and part of Terex’s Environmental Solutions segment, marks its 125th anniversary in 2026. Founded in 1901 by German immigrant Julius P. Heil in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, the company began as Heil Rail Joint Welding Co., pioneering electric welding for streetcar rails before expanding into truck bodies and tanks.

By the 1930s, Heil garbage trucks were serving hundreds of U.S. cities. Over its history, the company introduced multiple industry firsts, including the world’s first electrically welded compartmental tank, stainless steel milk tank trucks, aluminum oil transport trucks, and, more recently, the industry’s first all-electric automated side loader.

Heil manufactured military refueling equipment during World War II and continued post-war innovations such as molded fiberglass transports and all-nickel trailers. Its flagship facility in Fort Payne, Alabama, established in 1971, now serves customers in over 150 countries.

“For 125 years, Heil has stood for integrity, innovation, and customer satisfaction,” said Pat Carroll, President of Environmental Solutions. Looking ahead, Heil remains committed to sustainable waste collection, investing in advanced technologies and workforce expertise to continue shaping the future of refuse management.
