Hancock County Launched Glass Recycling Program


SEATTLE (Recycling Monster): Hancock County Solid Waste District has been awarded a grant of $15,300 by the Indiana Department of Environmental Management (IDEM). This will pave way for the first free, public recycling option for the community.

The grant, allocated as part of the Community Recycling Grant Program will be used by the County to purchase large containers to collect glass for recycling. It must be noted that IDEM had awarded grants totalling nearly $513,600 to as many as 16 applicants across the state, comprising of counties, municipalities, solid waste management districts, schools and nonprofit organizations in Indiana.

The County is expected to receive the containers this spring, which will be placed at the Republic Services transfer station on Franklin Street in Greenfield. The public will be allowed to drop glass for recycling for free. The collected glass will be transported to a processing facility in Hartford City. The processed glass will be taken to Shelbyville-based Knapf Fiberglass, where they will be further processed for use in fiberglass insulation, said the news release.

Dede Allender, Director of Recycle Hancock County stated that it is excited about the grant, which has helped it to provide a new recycling option for everyone in the community.
