Fairfax County to Launch Public Outreach Campaign on New Trash Collection System

SEATTLE (Recycling Monster): Fairfax County announced launch of a public outreach campaign ahead of the proposed changes to its trash collection system.

The Unified Sanitation Districts (USD) waste collection system was first proposed by the Department of Public Works and Environmental Services (DPWES) last December. Under the new scheme, the county would be responsible for managing waste hauling contracts directly with collectors. All residential waste collection would be conducted by private collectors. The proposed changes are expected to make the trash management easier for residents in single-family homes.

The implementation of USD is expected to deliver residents several benefits including transparent pricing and up to 25% annual cost saving. It guarantees more consistent level of service. In addition, the system will result in fewer large trucks on neighborhood roads, thus leading to lesser greenhouse gas emissions.

The education campaign will be launched ahead of the June hearing, when the supervisors will vote on whether to start the transition, DPWES noted. As per state law, the system could come into effect only after a five-year transition period. Even if the supervisors vote for the transition during the upcoming hearing in June, the system would come into effect only in 2030.
