ExxonMobil Drives Advanced Plastic Recycling in Baytown

SEATTLE (Recycling Monster): The Baytown advanced plastic recycling facility has reportedly played a key role in changing the destiny of plastic. The facility uses ExxonMobil’s proprietary Exxtend Technology to recycle the feedstock fed into it from the Baytown sorting facility, which collects and sorts large quantities of plastic.

It must be noted that ExxonMobil had formed Houston Recycling Collaboration by partnering with the City of Houston, LyondellBasell and FCC Environmental Services towards collection of plastic waste from residents. The waste, mostly in bails, is offloaded onto conveyor belt and shredders, after which they are densified and compacted into a harder pellet, which are then fed into the ExxonMobil facility.

The advanced plastic recycling facility offers several advantages. For instance it is capable of recycling water bottle along with cap, which is not possible in normal mechanical recycling facilities. Also, mixed plastic waste such as dry cleaner bags and grocery bags may create troubles for mechanical recyclers, but works fine with advanced recycling facility. In addition, it could also easily handle pizza boxes made of plastic and paper, which currently ends up in landfills.

The Baytown facility commenced its operations in October last year. ExxonMobil plans to duplicate and grow this operation into other regions as well.
