EPA, local authorities assessing safety concerns at Toledo chemical storage and plastic recycling facility

TOLEDO, Ohio (WTVG) - Local and federal authorities are investigating and implementing safety precautions at a chemical storage and plastic recycling facility in Toledo.

Crews are working to figure out next steps to ensure health and safety of the community after officials found concerns with improper chemical storage and a non-operational fire suppression system at the Omnipolymer facility at 1925 Nebraska Avenue, according to a City of Toledo Spokesperson. Toledo Fire Prevention Bureau and Environmental Services crews found the concerns during an inspection on Monday.

Nebraska Avenue was shut down from Brown to Woodstock Wednesday while crews work and reopened just before 6:00 p.m.. The city said there is no active threat to nearby residents and businesses, and the public is asked to avoid the area to allow crews to operate safely.

The Omnipolymer facility specializes in plastic grinding and container re-conditioning, its website says. The address also houses a Global Chemical Resources warehouse. Its website says the Toledo location is a full service chemical distributor. The “core products” in Toledo consist of the following list, according to its website:

Acetic Acid, Caustic Soda, Potassium Hydroxide, Citric Acid, Ethanolamines, Formic Acid, Glycerine, Phosphoric Acid, Propylene Glycol, Sodium Nitrite (solid and liquid), and EDTA liquids (E-39 dissolvine, Versene 100, etc)
