Electra Battery Recycling Demo Project to be Completed in March

SEATTLE (Recycling Monster): Electra Battery Materials Corporation expects the battery recycling demonstration plant to be completed by March this year. The plant is designed to recover and recycle elements found in lithium-ion batteries. It must be noted that the black mass recycling demonstration plant was launched in late-December last year.

According to the company, the demo plant is set up with the aim of recycling nickel, cobalt, lithium, copper and graphite from the batteries at its battery materials complex north of Toronto, Ontario, Canada. With adoption of more electric vehicles in North America, there will be a need for increased domestic supply of battery-grade materials, it noted.

Upon completion of demonstration plant project and it delivering successful results, the company plans to proceed with building a 5,000 tonne per annum black mass processing facility within Ontario battery materials park. Once completed successfully, it will be the first of its kind project in North America, said Mark Trevisiol, Vice President of Project Development at Electra.

The black mass demonstration plant reveals Electra’s metallurgical expertise and its efforts to address North America’s requirement for battery-grade materials. It will boost the company’s efforts to build a full-fledged integrated battery materials plant.
