Covington Battery Recycling Plant Announced Grand Opening


SEATTLE (Recycling Monster): Westborough, Mass.-based Ascend Elements announced grand opening of its Base 1 battery recycling plant in Covington on 29th March, 2023. The facility has been operational since August 2022.

The 150,000-square foot facility is located at 9176 Industrial Drive Northeast and has annual shredding capacity of around 30,000 metric tons of used batteries and battery scrap. It recycles used lithium-ion batteries from several sources. Recently, the company had signed an agreement with Honda Motor Co. towards supply of recycled battery materials, including nickel and cobalt.

The facility employs modern techniques that ensure 98% recovery of critical materials 90% lesser carbon emissions, compared to traditional methods.

The grand opening ceremony will be attended by Ascend Elements CEO Mike O’Kronley, Covington Mayor Steve Horton and Newton County Industrial Development Authority Chairman Lanier Sims.

O’Kronley noted that the company is proud to be part of recent electric vehicle and battery manufacturing infrastructure growth in Georgia. The facility is an important part of America’s nationwide effort to build a domestic EV battery materials infrastructure. The company looks forward to several years of Association with the Newton County and its people, he added.
