County to Close Recycling Drop-Off Sites by End of the Year

SEATTLE (Recycling Monster): The Cosciusko County has decided to close all outdoor recycling drop-off sites by the end of the current year.

The County Solid Waste Management District, in its meeting held Nov. 22, arrived at a decision to close the sites managed by the Kosciusko County Recycling Depot. Accordingly, the sites at Claypool, Leesburg, Mentone, Milford, North Webster, Pierceton, Silver Lake, Syracuse and Warsaw will close as of 31st December, 2022. However, the Warsaw location on Union Street will continue to accept electronics items as well as household hazard waste for recycling.

Each drop-off site will have a signage to inform residents about the closure. Additionally, the news about the closure have already been posted on social media.

The County press release noted that effective Jan.1, 2023, county-wide curbside recycling services, provided by Elkhart-based Borden Waste-Away Service Inc., will begin. The services through Borden will cost $8 per month for residents.

The curbside recycling service program will result in reduced contamination rates, the County hoped. Borden’s contamination rates are estimated at around 10%, as compared with high contamination rates of up to 40% at recycling drop-off stations. It must be noted that the drop-off sites have been receiving as much garbage as recyclables.
