Convertus Begins U.S. Expansion with Acquisition of Virginia Facility

SEATTLE (Recycling Monster): Leading Canada-based organics company Convertus started U.S. expansion by acquiring a Manassas, Virginia-based composting facility from Freestate Farms.

Although this is the company’s first composting facility in the U.S., it is Convertus’ second asset in the country. Earlier in 2022, the company had added a bagging and warehouse facility for compost and organic products in Maine by way of acquisition of Canada-based Envirem and its assets.

According to company press release, the acquired site currently has a processing capacity of approximately 80,000 to 100,000 tons of organic waste per annum. Convertus plans to make additional investments at the plant over the next 18 to 24 months and to add anaerobic digestion (AD) capabilities and accepting food waste later on.

The company currently runs 14 sites, whose collective organic waste processing capacity is around 500,000 metric tons. These facilities generate huge quantities of renewable natural gas, compost and fertilizer. It targets to process over 1 million tons of organics every year. The recent acquisition is considered as a big step forward in achieving the goal.

Convertus targets to become North America’s largest and most advanced organic waste treatment company, said Jamie Jongsma, CFO.
