SEATTLE (Recycling Monster): WM (Waste Management) is marking the first anniversary of its organics recycling program serving residents and businesses in unincorporated Nevada County, California, USA and the Grass Valley, California, USA area. The initiative was launched in January 2025 to support California Senate Bill 1383, which aims to cut methane emissions by diverting organic waste from landfills.
The program introduced curbside collection of food scraps and food-soiled paper, significantly expanding the region’s waste diversion efforts. During its first year, more than 12,000 tons of organic materials were diverted from landfills, helping reduce greenhouse gas emissions and support California’s broader sustainability goals. It must be noted that Nevada City, California, USA is currently exempt from the program.
County officials say community participation has played a major role in the initiative’s early success. Data shows a 24% increase in organics diversion since the program began in the first quarter of 2025.
Diverted organic waste is processed into nutrient-rich compost, reducing landfill volumes while creating valuable soil products. WM said it will continue collaborating with local governments and customers to increase diversion rates, reduce contamination, and further support the region’s climate and waste reduction targets.
