Columbia County recycling center deemed total loss following fire Sunday

PARDEEVILLE, Wis. (WMTV) - Nearly eight fire agencies spent hours battling a fire at a Columbia County recycling center Sunday evening.

Fire departments from Sauk and Columbia County worked to put out a fire at the Columbia County Recycling and Waste Processing Facility. Portage Fire Chief Troy Haase said that 30-40 firefighters were at the scene.

“About 99% of them are volunteers or paid on call, so it’s a big ask for them and I appreciate them all coming out today,” Haase said.

Firefighters spent hours putting out the fire by moving the garbage outside and away from the building. Haase said hotspots will likely occur and may need to be put out again Monday morning.

Officials said the fire likely started from something in the garbage before spreading throughout the building.

Haase believes the building is a total loss and that it will have to be completely reconstructed.
