City to Reinstate Suspended Plastic Bag Recycling Program

SEATTLE (Recycling Monster): The City of Evanston in Cook County, Illinois announced that the plastic bag recycling program, which was suspended for a while, will soon be reinstated. The plastic bag recycling program at community centers is run by Jewel-Osco as a courtesy.

The City had removed plastic bag collection bins in late-July this year, following lack of response from Jewel-Osco for pickup over the past several months. Brian Zimmerman, the City of Evanston’s solid waste coordinator confirmed that the City has got in touch with the supermarket chain and has been assured about possible resumption of collection at the earliest.

Jewel-Osco ships its own plastic film waste to Virginia-headquartered Trex, which uses them for creating building materials. The City has only an informal agreement with Jewel-Osco. The same trucks that collects Jewel’s plastic film used to collect material from Evanston’s community centers, the main public library and Morton Civic Center.

Mary Frances Trucco, director of communications, public affairs and government relations for Jewel-Osco apologized for the inconvenience caused to the City and promised that collections will resume in foreseeable future.
