SEATTLE (Recycling Monster): The City of Portland, MI is reportedly exploring possibilities to transition to a single-hauler waste collection. This is aimed at streamline garbage, yard waste, and recycling services. Earlier in January this year, the City Council has amended regulations to allow for an exclusive service provider, rather than depending on different service providers.
According to city officials, the planned change will enable the city to provide citizens with waste collection services that are more effective, affordable, and transparent. It will provide all Portland homeowners with streamlined rubbish collection services. Additionally, this will lead to lower expenses and improved public safety.

At the moment, the City relies on three separate garbage companies. Heavy truck traffic has been held responsible for neighborhood street traffic jams, route overlap, and inconsistent pricing under the current system. The City Council stated that the proposed transition will solve the aforementioned problems and result in significant cost savings by combining recycling and trash services under a single service provider.
However, there were worries that there would be less competition, which would result in a service provider monopoly.
