City of Portage to End Curbside Recycling Pickup

SEATTLE (Recycling Monster): The City of Portage will soon end curbside recycling pickup. The recycling program in the city has been on suspension since 2021 on account of rising volumes of trash in recycling toters.

Randy Reeder, Streets and Sanitation Superintendent announced plans to propose ordinances to discontinue the suspended program. However, there are no plans to end the recycling altogether. The City plans to come up with an alternative solution to the suspended program. One possible option is to put up recycling centres throughout the city, he said.

The recycle cans collected by recycling trucks are taken to Republic Services. Upon checking, it was found that they still are contaminated. In order to make residents comply with the rules, the city has confiscated several recycling totters. However, there has not been significant changes in recycling participation by residents.

Mayor Austin Bonta said that he will meet department heads to discuss potential solutions. Also, any fines paid by residents deemed noncompliant, will be refunded or credited. Residents will not be allowed to take trash to the Sanitation Department dumpsters free of charge, on account of rising costs.

In addition, the city plans to create a beautification and sustainability committee that will design and fund various green projects.
