SEATTLE (Recycling Monster): Casella Waste Systems and Waga Energy announced official opening of a renewable natural gas (RNG) production facility at the Chemung County Landfill in Elmira, New York.
A ribbon-cutting ceremony was held on May 14 to mark the formal opening of the facility, which has been operational since January this year.
The facility uses Waga Energy’s proprietary WAGABOX technology to convert landfill gas into pipeline-grade renewable natural gas. The gas thus produced is delivered directly into the local distribution network operated by Valley Energy, thereby providing a lower-carbon substitute to conventional natural gas for regional consumers.
The plant has a capacity to generate up to 610,000 MMBtu of renewable gas annually. Furthermore, it will reduce greenhouse gas emissions by more than 47,000 metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent each year, according to U.S. environmental benchmarks.
The facility has recorded strong performance during its first four months of operation, and is expected to produce around 340,000 MMBtu in its first year of operation.
Under the long-term agreement, the construction of the facility was financed by Waga Energy, which in turn will own and manage the facility for the next 20 years. In the meantime, proceeds from renewable gas sales will be shared by both companies.
Casella CEO Ned Coletta said the project reflects the company’s strategy of collaborating with specialized partners to unlock value from waste streams while advancing sustainability goals.
