Cardboard Recycling Program Returns to Lewiston

SEATTLE (Recycling Monster): The City of Lewiston announced return of cardboard recycling program. The program, run by Snowy Mountain Industries (SMI) was suspended three years ago, citing several reasons including cost and pandemic. As per new plan, the program is all set to return on the sidelines of upcoming Earth Day.

According to Shari Hagenbuch, Area Manager, SMI, the redesigned program is expected to work better. It is designed as a six-month long trial membership program, which will allow businesses and individuals to drop off cardboard at set days and times by paying a membership fee. The program will recycle any type of cardboard, including shipping cartons, cereal or soft drink boxes, pizza boxes or paper towel tubes, Hagenbuch added.

Previously, people used to drop off cardboard after hours. Also, they used to drop cardboard, boxes containing packing materials and even garbage. In addition, it cost the city much as all the collected cardboards needed to be shipped to Steel Etc. in Great Falls for recycling.

The new program will address all the above shortcomings. The drop offs will be scheduled by appointment. Also, recyclers will be required to sign up for memberships depending on the volume of cardboard they need to recycle.

The signing up for cardboard recycling membership is set to begin on Saturday, April 22, Earth Day.
