SEATTLE (Recycling Monster): According to latest data released by Call2Recycle Canada, Inc., the country recycled nearly 4.4 million kilograms of batteries in 2022. Also, four provinces posted new collection records.
As per data, the province of B.C. diverted over 865,000 kilograms of batteries from landfills, recording its best-ever yearly collection. Saskatchewan too reached provincial collection record of over 109,000 kilograms. Manitoba collections hit the highest level in its history, at over 153,000 kilograms. Ontario’s collection volumes topped 1.415 million kilograms in 2022. Quebec’s collection, at 1.429 million kilograms, once again exceeded targets. Prince Edward collection too hit peaks of 42,000 kilograms.

CalRecycle highlighted significant progress made by Alberta, New Brunswick, and Yukon in advancing towards Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) legislation. Meantime, it also entered into a new collaboration to mark its expansion into the automotive sector, the report noted.
Joe Zenobio, President of Call2Recycle Canada, Inc. thanked the efforts of its collection and program partners including industry and government collaborators. The programs to increase the accessibility of its recycling program to all communities will further boost battery collection volumes in future, he hoped.
