Boyle County Solid Waste and Recycling is hosting a Hazardous Household Waste collection event on Saturday, August 26. It will be from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Boyle County Recycling Center at 1862 South Danville Bypass.

People will be able to bring hazardous waste such as motor oil, antifreeze, batteries, paint, pesticides, sealant, fluorescent tubes, drain cleaners, etc. for free disposal.

Items that are not accepted include tires, oversized items, and things that are unsafe for waste employees to handle.

Boyle County Environmental Services Director Angela Muncy explained that tires are not considered household hazardous waste.

The state has a waste tire collection in every county every three years, and Boyle County’s is in the Fall of 2024. Otherwise, people can take tires to SMS Tire in Brodhead for a fee. “The vendor reserves the right to refuse any waste deemed unsafe to handle or unsuitable for the collection,” Muncy said.

“Such wastes include large quantities of unknown materials such as radioactive waste, explosives, gun powder, flares, ammunition, and unknown gas cylinders to name a few.” The event is free for Boyle County residents only. WHIR Radio will be broadcasting live and will be serving hamburgers, hot dogs and Pepsi.

This event is made possible by a grant from the KY State Division of Waste Management’s Recycling and Local Assistance Branch, and is an annual one-day event.

Other examples of household hazardous waste include aerosol Spray Cans, ammonia, old chemistry sets, arts and crafts supplies, oven cleaners, bleaches, paint thinner, brake fluid, pool chemicals, rodent killers, wood strippers, etc.
