BEAVER – Some borough residents will now have to pay for their recycling.
But they will get more recycling days during a given month as a result.
On Tuesday, Beaver Council agreed to terminate its agreement with Joseph J. Brunner Inc., which provided recycling for the borough.
Councilman Jim Perini said for years, the borough had been paying the recycling costs for the approximately 1,200 residents who used Brunner Inc. for recycling.
Now, beginning July 1, those residents will be directly billed and pay for their recycling themselves. Brunner Inc. will still provide trash and recycling to the borough.
Perini said Brunner told the borough if it was going to continue paying, the rate would increase to $1,500 per month, which would translate to $1.25 per house per pickup.
Brunner said this is due to rising fuel and labor costs.
Now, with this new deal, Brunner Inc. will pick up recycling every other Monday, meaning it will be at least twice a month, when before it was only once a month.
Perini said residents have expressed interest in having more recycling days in a month.
He said Brunner Inc. wanted to charge residents $6 a month for recycling, but officials managed to get the price down to $3.80 a month.
Residents will be notified of the change, as well as Brunner Inc. raising its monthly trash rate for residents to $14.50, due to rising costs.
Perini said residents can call Brunner Inc. and opt out of recycling if they don’t wish to pay that cost, adding the borough will still offer its recycling program.
