SEATTLE (Recycling Monster): Athens Services, a leading provider of garbage and recycling services, announced plans to build a new, cutting-edge materials recovery facility (MRF) in Irwindale, California.
Nearly 200,000 tons of materials will be diverted from landfills annually because to the proposed facility's potential to treat up to 70 tons per hour of mixed stream of materials, including dry commercial, residential, mixed residential, and dry municipal solid waste. The facility will occupy a brand-new building that is 155,500 square feet in size.

CP Group, a San Diego, California-based firm, designed the plant, which has two infeed lines with an hourly capacity of 35 tons each. The MRF's contemporary design greatly lowers manual sorting by doing away with the conventional pre-sort station. It will also have 16 of the most up-to-date MSS NIR optical sorters, which will allow for effective processing and separation.
The facility's construction is almost finished, having started in September of last year. By May of this year, the plant should be completely operating.
For the towns it serves, the facility marks a new era in sustainability and garbage management, according to Riel Johnson, VP of Resource Recovery at Athens Services. According to him, the company wants to set the standard for resource recovery by fusing innovative technology with environmentally friendly methods.
